Planning of standardised mitre gates (Neckar)

The river Neckar was developed into a federal waterway on a length of 203 km between 1921 and 1968. Upstream of Stuttgart, the 27 locks on the barrages, whose building substance has an age of between 40 and 80 years, consist of twin locks with a length of 110 m and a width of 12 m.

Due to the age of most of these locks, complete refurbishment was required. In this context, an extension of one of the two chambers was planned to accommodate vessels with a length of 135 m. In the course of the complete refurbishment work and the lock chamber extension, the locks, the gate and the emptying systems as well as the drive units were to be standardised.

IRS was commissioned with engineering services for the planning of standardised mitre gates for 25 locks on the river Neckar. The particular challenge in this regard was the consideration of the existing structures and the narrow space available for drive units and gate bearings.

The result of the planning work was one standardised head gate variant as well as nine standardised tail gate variants as mitre gates with different gate heights for a total of 25 barrages with lifting heights of between 3.75 m and 8.86 m. In addition, spare gate variants consisting of three modules each were developed for the standardised tail gates. The spare gates consist of a standardised upper and lower part, as well as a varying intermediate part, and can be assembled as required for the relevant lock.

Scope of planning:
- Planning of standardised mitre gate on lock heads (1 type of gate for all locks)
- Planning of standardised mitre gate on lock tails (9 different types of gates)
- Planning of standardised spare gate for lock tails as a modular structure (consisting of 3 modules)
- Planning of standardised components of the standardised mitre gates

Technical data:
- Chamber width: 12.00 m
- Largest lifting height: 8.86 m
- Lowest lifting height: 3.75 m
- Largest gate height: 13.55 m
- Smallest gate height: 5.30 m
